I was reading a little of the book of Ecclesiastes tonight--just seemed very apropos for this season that I'm in. Chapter 3, in particular, really spoke to me tonight:
"What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God." (3:9-13)
At the moment, I'm trying to sort through how this eternity that has been set in my heart relates to being satisfied with life. Definitely something I'll be chewing on for awhile . . . Any thoughts?
I've just got a lot going on in my mind right now. Today is the first day of a new season in my life--and I'm not just talking about the first day of summer. Tuesday was my last day at Gap, and last Thursday was my last day at the preschool (for now). As of tomorrow, I no longer have a scheduled job. On Thursday, one of my best friends, Shauna, is moving here. As of mid-July, she will be my new roommate, and we'll probably be moving into a new place.
As one of my friends said, "It's like you're playing 'Upset the Fruit Basket' with your life." It's true . . . everything is being tossed around, and I have no idea where any of the pieces will land. Exciting stuff.
Totally off the subject . . . My friend Donnie is in Germany at the World Cup, bringing unity among the nations with his giant pogo stick, the flybar. And he has a blog. Why the AP or CNN hasn't discovered him (or maybe they have, and I just haven't discovered the articles), has me stumped. I can't think of too many stories more interesting than this one . . . Don't know how it fits into your life but within the last week or so I have introduced Corbin, my grandson, Mandy's nephew, to wild blackberries, plums right off the tree in our front yard, and most excitedly, lightning bugs. Corbin prefers the northeatern term of fireflys, not too fond of lightning, or more so the accompaning thunder that goes with it. I never thought I could get so much joy from picking berries off the vine and watching him eat them as fast as I could pick them. And then I showed him those little beetles that light up at night. He was delighted. It took a little convincing to assure him that they were indeed harmless to humans. Too soon to let him know that sometimes the female will eat the male after they mate. I'll warn Corbin about other female attrocities later in life. We were unsucessfull on the first night we tried to catch some but the next night we caught four of them. It was funny because they were flying about two feet off the ground at dusk, he could see them but I could'nt. We put them in a jar and left them on the dressere that night for the best nightlight a 2 year old could ever hope for. Anyway, a lot of bad stuff has been going on in my life but the task of picking blackberries, plums and fireflys from the air have set a lot of that stuff on the back burner.
By the way, I ate a few of those berries myself. God makes good candy.
