perseids

i try to go to sleep earlier than 1:35 a.m.
on thursday nights,
but on this particular august evening,
i stayed up to see
the perseids meteor shower
i know what you're thinking:
nerd.
but that's okay.
this year, i left my house around 11:00
and drove out into the middle of nowhere.
surprisingly, once i arrived at my "deserted" location,
i found that 10-15 strangers also had the same idea.
we all watched in silence as meteors zoomed across the dark sky
in all different directions.
i fought the urge to cheer every time i saw one.
instead, i tried to focus on the beauty in the chaos--
or at least what appeared to be chaos to my
meager human eye.

You get the nerdy part right off the old apple tree, I too look forward to the annual cosmic display of the Perseids. They arrive every year around Corbin's birthday, curtesy of the comet Swift-Tuttle. One of my favorite memories is sitting in our front yard in lawn chairs with Jim Carter, smoking cheap cigars, and watching the light show.
Sometimes its okay to be a nerd.
