roadtrip

(me with Bubba and Andy at Red Rocks last spring)

(Elizabethtown)

This Thursday morning, I'm going to fly to Nashville to spend some time with one of my oldest and dearest friends, Bubba. Yes, I call him Bubba. We'll be hanging out in Nashvegas for a day or so, then taking a little road trip up to Ohio. Once there, I'll stay with my family until Tuesday morning, then fly back here out of Dayton.

I have to admit that I'm probably a little overly excited about the little roadtrip from Nashville to Ohio -- particularly because we'll be driving directly through Elizabethtown, Kentucky. As many of you know, the film Elizabethtown is one of my favorites. Shauna and I both pretty much have it memorized. I realize that most of the movie wasn't even filmed in the town, but still, I'm excited.

In honor of this event, I spent about an hour today creating a mix CD for our journey. If you've seen Elizabethtown, you'll understand why this was an absolute necessity.

Here's what I came up with:

1. Airline to Heaven -- Billy Bragg & Wilco
2. Saving Grace -- Tom Petty
3. Big Guns -- Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins
4. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere -- Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
5. Ooh La La -- Faces
6. Runnin' Down a Dream -- Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
7. I'm on Fire -- Bruce Springsteen
8. Imaginary Bars -- Great Lake Swimmers
9. San Jose -- Joe Purdy
10. Come Pick Me Up -- Ryan Adams
11. Tire Swing -- Kimya Dawson
12. Anyone Else but You -- The Moldy Peaches
13. I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll -- Gillian Welch
14. Left on Laura, Left on Lisa -- The Avett Brothers
15. Cocaine Habit -- Old Crow Medicine Show
16. It's My Fault for Being Famous -- The White Stripes with Beck
17. You Left the Water Running -- Otis Redding
18. As Tears Roll By -- Daniel Lanois
19. I Woke Up Today -- Port O'Brien
20. Seven Nation Army -- The White Stripes
21. I Turn My Camera On -- Spoon
22. Stargaze -- Xavier Rudd

you should be banned from putting "come pick me up" on mixtapes. ha. just kidding. sounds like an awesome trip, i'm jealous. i've traveled this many many times... note to self, don't traverse bourbon county looking for bourbon on a sunday.

For the record, I put "Come Pick Me Up" on this mix because it's in the movie; however, now that I think about it, "English Girls Approximately" is also played in the movie and might be a better fit for the mix. I'll consider making a swap. :)

And fortunately, I'll be traveling on a Friday afternoon. Bourbon for all!

ANNOUNCEMENT: we still need to take our Elizabethtown inspired road trip up the coast of California before all of the mix CDs that I made are completely out of date.
